AC 360: The Battle Against Steering Grows

Chris Medine • Feb 18, 2015

Are repair shops to blame for substandard practices, or are they doing what the insurance companies tell them to do after an accident? A recent investigative report on CNN exposes cheap parts that put you at risk.

The report, which aired on CNN's AC360 on February 10th noted that, “more than 500 garages from 36 states are joining in a lawsuit against the top insurance companies, and states like Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma are also getting involved.”

The more than ten minute exposé quoted Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell, noting that while there is a multi-state class action suit happening, Caldwell is taking separate action As well. The report said Caldwell, “has filed suit against State Farm insurance, saying its low-cost repair program could be dangerous for customers who get back on the road in vehicles that are not roadworthy.”

CNN also talked to Matt Parker, a repair shop owner in Monroe, Louisiana. Parker said that when it comes to steering and cheap parts he fears, “thousands of Americans could be driving round in vehicles repaired with what he calls junkyard parts after seeking repairs from body shops recommended by their auto insurance companies who took their premiums and picked up the bill.”
